Short answer for 2026: a small business website in the USA costs $625 to $4,995 with us, at a fixed price agreed before we start. Web design companies shortlisted on Clutch typically bill $100 to $149 an hour, according to Clutch’s web design pricing guide (checked October 2026), and Clutch notes that agencies in North America charge more than those in lower-cost regions, which is why agency quotes for the same five-page site often land in the thousands. Below is what each price buys, what pushes it up, and the running costs nobody mentions on the first call.

US website costs at a glance, 2026
| Route | What it costs | Ongoing | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hire The Creatives Fixed price, you own it |
$625 Starter, $1,895 Business, from $4,995 Premium | Hosting; support included for 90 days (Business) or 12 months (Premium) | Small businesses that want a known number up front |
| DIY website builder Template, you build it |
A monthly plan fee; current US prices are on the Wix, Squarespace and Shopify pricing pages | The plan fee, every month, for as long as the site is live | Testing an idea, a placeholder |
| Freelancer One person, hourly or per job |
Quoted per job. For context, the median US web developer and digital designer earns $47.85 an hour as an employee (BLS, May 2025 data, checked October 2026); a freelancer also has to cover their own overheads | Hosting, plus their rate for every change | A clear, small scope and someone you already trust |
| Budget agency on a builder Wix, WordPress, Squarespace, Webflow or Shopify |
$25 to $49 an hour, Clutch’s average rate for web design work on those builders (Clutch, checked October 2026) | The builder’s own monthly plan, plus hourly changes | A simple template site where price matters more than design |
| US web design agency A team, billed by the hour |
$100 to $149 an hour across agencies shortlisted on Clutch; most projects reviewed there cost under $10,000 (Clutch, checked October 2026) | Retainers, support, change requests | Large or complex builds with a big team behind them |
At those agency rates, our $1,895 Business price buys roughly 13 to 19 billable hours. We can charge it as a fixed price because most small business sites are the same shape, so we are not reinventing the build every time.
What is the average website design cost in the USA?
$38,105 is the average cost of a web design project reviewed on Clutch, but most of those projects cost less than $10,000. Both figures come from Clutch’s pricing guide (updated September 2026, checked October 2026), and the gap between the two shows how much a few large builds lift the average, so a typical small business quote sits well below it. Clutch also reports that the average project it has reviewed runs for 7 months. Clutch’s figures cover agencies worldwide rather than the US alone, so treat them as a guide to how agencies price, not a US census. A small business site with a clear scope does not need a seven month project: our Starter is typically live in about a week and our Business site in two to three weeks.
How much does a web design company in the USA charge?
$100 to $149 an hour is what web design companies shortlisted on Clutch typically charge, and that is the rate a US agency quote is usually built from, even when it arrives as a single project figure. The table below turns our fixed prices into the agency hours they would buy at that rate, so you can compare like with like.
| Our fixed price | What it includes | Agency hours at $100 to $149 |
|---|---|---|
| $625 Starter | 1 to 5 pages, custom design, contact form, basic SEO, hosting setup | Roughly 4 to 6 hours |
| $1,895 Business | Up to 15 pages, WordPress, Stripe payments, advanced SEO, 90 days support | Roughly 13 to 19 hours |
| From $4,995 Premium | Online store or bespoke build, API integrations, 12 months support | Roughly 34 to 50 hours |
Few agencies can design, build, test and launch a five page site in four to six billable hours, which is why their quotes for the same job tend to be higher. We can hold these prices because the scope of each package is fixed and written down before we start.
How much do web designers charge for a 4 page website in the USA?
$625 with us. Our Starter website covers one to five pages, so a four page site fits with room for one more. It includes a custom design, a mobile-first build, basic SEO and analytics, a contact form and hosting setup, and it is typically live in about a week. If the four pages need to take payments or bookings, that is our Business website at $1,895 instead, because anything that transacts is where the real hours go.
How much do web designers charge for a 5 page website in the USA?
$625 with us, because five pages is exactly what our Starter package covers. A typical five page small business site is Home, About, Services, Reviews or Gallery, and Contact, and all of that fits. At an agency billing $100 to $149 an hour, the useful question to ask is how many hours they have estimated, because that number times the rate is the real quote. If you want a sixth page, a blog you update yourself or online payments, that is the point where the $1,895 Business package makes more sense than stretching a Starter.
How much does a small business website cost in the USA?
$1,895 for most small businesses that rely on the site for leads. That is our Business package: up to 15 pages, bespoke design and animation, WordPress so you can edit it yourself, advanced SEO and speed work, Stripe payments and 90 days of support. It typically goes live in two to three weeks. If your work all comes by word of mouth and the site is really a business card, the $625 Starter is enough, and we will tell you so.
How much does an ecommerce website cost in the USA?
From $4,995 with us. Our Premium website covers online stores, web apps and bespoke builds with API integrations, a full SEO strategy, priority support and 12 months of support. The price is fixed before we start, once we know what the store has to connect to. If you choose a hosted store platform, its monthly plan fee and transaction fees sit on top of any build cost; check those on the Shopify pricing page before you compare quotes.
What do affordable web design companies in the USA charge, and what do you give up?
$25 to $49 an hour is Clutch’s average rate for web design work on builders such as Wix, WordPress, Squarespace, Webflow and Shopify, which is where most cheap web design companies sit. The low hourly rate is real, but check what comes with it:
- A template, not a design. At that rate you are usually paying for a theme to be configured with your logo and words, so your site looks like many others in your trade.
- Hourly billing with no cap. A cheap rate on an open-ended estimate can still add up to more than a fixed price.
- A subscription you cannot leave. On a hosted builder, the plan fee is paid every month and the site usually cannot be moved elsewhere.
- Ownership and support. Ask who holds the domain and the logins, and what a change costs once the site is live.
A fixed $625 or $1,895 sits below what the typical US agency would bill for the same scope, without the open-ended hours. You get a custom design, a written scope and a price that does not move. For a fuller comparison, see cheap vs professional web design.
How much does Shopify website development cost in the USA?
From $4,995 with us for a full online store, plus Shopify’s own monthly plan and payment fees. Our Premium package covers a store with its catalogue, integrations, a full SEO strategy and 12 months of support, at a price fixed once we know what the store has to connect to. For context, Clutch puts the average hourly rate for web design work on Shopify at $25 to $49, which is mostly theme setup rather than a store designed around your products. If you only sell a handful of items or take deposits, Stripe payments in our $1,895 Business package may be all you need, and we will tell you which one fits. Shopify’s current plan prices are on the Shopify pricing page; our WordPress vs React vs Shopify guide covers when a store platform is the right choice.
How much does a WordPress website cost in the USA?
$1,895 for a WordPress site you can run yourself. WordPress is the CMS in our Business package. The Starter at $625 is built to be handed over finished rather than edited weekly. Not sure WordPress is right for you? Read our comparison of WordPress vs React vs Shopify.
How much does a website cost per month in the USA?
$0 a month in build fees with us, because the build is a one-off price. What you do pay monthly is hosting and your domain renewal, plus anything you choose to add. Compare that with a website builder, where the plan fee is the website: stop paying and the site goes offline, and you own no design or code at the end. Over three years, which is roughly how long a site lasts before a refresh, the builder subscription often costs more than a one-off build did.
How much does SEO cost per month in the USA?
$379 a month for our SEO Foundation plan, cancel any time. It covers technical SEO and Core Web Vitals, Google Business Profile and local SEO, schema and AI-readability setup, one article a month and a monthly report. SEO Growth is $749 a month and adds four articles a month, answer engine work so ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews can cite you, link building and reporting every two weeks. SEO Authority starts at $1,499 a month for a tailored program with a dedicated strategist.
How much do web developers earn in the USA?
$92,650 a year is the median wage for US web developers, and $99,520 a year ($47.85 an hour) for web developers and digital designers combined, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (May 2025 data, checked October 2026). That is salary before an agency adds office costs, account managers, sales and profit, which is how a team’s billing rate reaches $100 to $149 an hour. It is also why a fixed price for a well-defined job is better value than paying by the hour for one.
What pushes a US website quote up
- Anything that transacts. Payments, bookings, accounts and logins take the most hours, because every edge case has to work.
- Integrations. Connecting to a CRM, a booking system or a stock feed is usually the biggest single line item.
- Content. If you supply the words and photos, the build costs less. If someone has to write and shoot them, that is a separate job.
- Bespoke design versus a theme. A configured theme and a design drawn for your business are different products at different prices.
- Page count, less than you would think. Ten similar pages cost little more than five.
How to tell if a US website quote is fair
- Is it fixed or an estimate? An hourly quote with no cap is how a small job quietly doubles.
- Who owns it at the end? Design, code, domain and content should all be yours, in writing.
- What will actually be done about search? “SEO friendly” is not a deliverable. Ask for the list.
- What does a change cost in month three? Get the rate before you sign.
- Can you open live sites they built? Real URLs on your own phone, not screenshots.
