Your website is outdated and isn’t performing. Should you refresh the existing one or build something new from scratch? It’s a question we get asked almost weekly. Here’s how to decide.
When a Redesign Makes Sense
A redesign works when the underlying structure and technology are solid but the visual design is dated or content needs updating. Signs a redesign is sufficient:
- The site loads fast and is technically sound
- It’s built on a modern CMS you can still update
- The URL structure and SEO are working well
- You mainly need updated visuals, content, and branding
- The existing site has good domain authority and backlinks you want to preserve
Typical cost: £1,000–£4,000 depending on the extent of changes.
When You Need a Complete Rebuild
A rebuild is necessary when the existing site is fundamentally broken. Signs you need to start fresh:
- Built on outdated technology (Flash, old PHP versions, deprecated frameworks)
- Page load speeds over 5 seconds that can’t be fixed with optimisation
- Not mobile-responsive and the current code can’t be adapted
- Built with a page builder that’s created 10,000 lines of unnecessary code
- Security vulnerabilities that patching won’t fix
- No clear URL structure or existing SEO is negligible
- Business has fundamentally changed and the site no longer reflects it
Typical cost: £1,499–£8,000+ depending on complexity.
The SEO Question
This is the biggest factor most people miss. If your current site has good search rankings, a rebuild can destroy them if not handled carefully. Proper URL mapping, 301 redirects, and preserving title tags and content are essential. We always audit existing SEO before recommending a rebuild.
Our Recommendation
If in doubt, we’ll audit your current site and give you an honest recommendation. Sometimes a £1,000 redesign achieves the same result as a £5,000 rebuild. We’ll tell you which one your business actually needs.
