Darling Mellow is a UK parenting and home-education publication we designed, built and run ourselves. It is a large WordPress content site, and it is the project that taught us most about making content actually findable rather than merely published.
The hard part was never writing the pages
It was making hundreds of them work as a structure rather than a pile. Big content sites fail in predictable ways: pages that never get indexed, internal links that go nowhere useful, sitemaps that quietly freeze, and duplicate near-identical pages that dilute each other. Every one of those we hit and had to fix.
What it needed
- An architecture, not an archive. Hub pages that genuinely lead somewhere, so both readers and search engines can see how the material fits together.
- Reliable publishing. A low-traffic WordPress site silently misses scheduled posts, because the scheduler only runs when somebody visits. That needed solving properly.
- Indexing that can be verified, not assumed. Being published and being indexed are different things, and the gap is where most content sites quietly lose.
- Legal care. Content that touches rights and entitlements has to be accurate and carefully worded, which is a discipline rather than a plugin.
What we learned that clients benefit from
- A frozen sitemap is invisible and lethal. Weeks of new pages can go unnoticed by Google while everything looks fine from the inside. We now check it as standard.
- Ranking is not the same as demand. We have pages sitting at position four that get almost no impressions, because nobody searches for that phrasing. Validate the demand before you build the page.
- Cache can lie to you. More than once the site on disk was correct and the site being served was not.
Why this matters for your site
If you want a site that grows through content rather than advertising, these are the failure modes that decide whether it works. We have already walked into them on our own site, at our own cost, which is why they are on the checklist for yours.
Frequently asked questions
Is Darling Mellow your own site?
Yes, it belongs to us. We built it on WordPress and run it, which is why its indexing, scheduling and caching problems were ours to find and fix rather than a client's.
How many free tools does Darling Mellow offer?
4 free interactive tools. Each asks a few questions and then writes the letter for you, alongside guides fact-checked against GOV.UK and kept current to 2026 law.
What does the Darling Mellow members' club cost?
£5.99 a month, and it can be cancelled at any time. Members get a fresh printable pack every month, all the templates and early access to new tools.
Can a WordPress site miss its scheduled posts?
Yes, on a low-traffic site. WordPress only runs its scheduler when somebody visits, so a quiet site can let a scheduled post slip. Triggering the scheduler from a real server cron job fixes it.
